"Men make history and not the other way around.
In periods where there is no leadership, society
stands still. Progress occurs when courageous,
skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change
things for the better." - Harry S. Truman
Thank you
to everyone who supported me in a successful bid
for re-election!!!
I recently
had the honor of traveling with a group of
lawmakers to Israel to tour the nation, study
alternative energy and learn more about the
conflict between Israel and Palestine. It was a
truly remarkable experience that forged deep
bonds between the participants and will make us
all better legislators.
The
complexities of this conflict are rooted in the
country’s history. Working 15 hours a day for
eight days, conducting over 30 interviews, and
visiting all walks of life, the twelve of us
barely scratched the surface.
If the
conflict was limited to borders, Israeli
settlements, Palestinian right of return, and
water rights, then reasonable men could come to
a rational agreement, and a political solution
would be possible. It appears Palestinian President Mahmoud
Abbas and Israel
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are ready for
compromise.
However,
as long as Hamas refuses to acknowledge Israel’s
right to exist and insists on the destruction of
the Jewish state, so long as the Jewish state
continues to put up fences and seal the
Palestinian's from the outside world, there is no room for
peaceful negotiations.
If I
learned anything on my trip, it is
that the state of Israel will fight for continued existence
as a nation and Palestinians want sovereign
travel between Gaza and the West Bank.
