Every ten years the United States Census Bureau conducts a population census. Following a census, Missouri state government is required to re-evaluate legislative boundaries based upon changes in population. The current 10th State Senate district is currently represented by State Senator Jolie Justus who was elected in 2006, and re-elected in 2010. State Senators in Missouri are elected to terms of four years, and eligible to serve two full terms. State Senator Justus will be termed out of office in 2014, and will not be on the ballot this coming August or November.
In Missouri there are 34 State Senate seats, half of which, either evens or odds are up for election every two years. Due to the circumstances of redistricting the current 10th State Senate seat, has now become the 7th State Senate seat. For the next two years State Senator Justus will technically represent the new 10th district, in Mid-Missouri. How this scenario plays out in reality is that this area in Kansas City (new 7th district) will have the representation of two State Senators for the next two years.
Roughly the boundaries of the new 7th State Senate District are as follows: the district’s northern border is the Missouri River, it follows the corridor between State Line Road to Troost Ave. south to I435, at I435 the district breaks east to take in the entirety or Grandview, Longview Lake, and parts of Lee’s Summit with the southern boundary being the Jackson County line.
